Crime dramas have been around for decades, and some of the best television shows of all time have come from the genre. The Wire, The Sopranos and Breaking Bad are still being watched, debated and rediscovered years after their finales.

Then in 2014, 50 Cent and Courtney A. Kemp gave audiences Power.

More than a decade later, what started as one series has turned into an entire universe. Between the original show and its spinoffs, 50 Cent has found a formula that works, while still finding ways to introduce new characters and stories that keep audiences invested. And with Power: Origins recently announced, that universe isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

But his latest series takes us somewhere completely different.

Premiering July 31, Fightland brings the crime drama to London and centers its story around the city’s boxing world. The series also marks a major milestone for STARZ as its first wholly owned original series, making Fightland the beginning of a new chapter for the network.

The BlkScript got an early look at the premiere, which also brought out some familiar faces from the STARZ family, including Wendell Pierce, La La Anthony, Tristan “Mack” Wilds and Naturi Naughton.

From the first few minutes, Fightland gets right into it. There’s no long wait for the story to pick up or for you to figure out where the conflict is coming from. By the end of the episode, there are already enough questions to make you want to see what happens next.

The series follows a former heavyweight boxing champion who finds himself behind bars after being betrayed by a crime family. Once he’s released, revenge is at the top of his list.

It’s a familiar setup for anyone who loves a good crime drama, but placing the story inside London’s boxing scene gives Fightland something different. There’s the grit and tension you’d expect from a 50 Cent produced series, but it doesn’t feel like Power with a London accent. The boxing world gives the show its own backdrop and another layer of stakes beyond what’s happening in the streets.

The cast also introduces viewers to some new faces, including Howard Charles, Nicholas Pinnock and Deborah Ayorinde.

And based on episode one, there’s plenty to work with.

50 Cent has spent the last decade proving that he understands what audiences want from this type of television. Complicated characters, loyalty that can change at any moment, family dynamics, power struggles and, of course, somebody looking for revenge.

Fightland has all of that, just this time across the pond.

We’ll have to see where the season takes us, but after getting an early look, 50 Cent might have another one.

Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for ‘Jumanji: Open World,’ offering audiences a chaotic first look at Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan in the third and final installment of the blockbuster reboot trilogy.

This time, the video game escapes its console and spills into reality. In this final chapter, avatars Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Johnson), Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Hart), Professor Sheldon Oberon (Black), and Ruby Roundhouse (Gillan) are stuck in “demo mode” as they navigate the real world. To send the avatars back into the game, the crew must pull off a chaotic mission—one made far more complicated as the players swap bodies with real people in Spencer Gilpin’s (Alex Wolff) life.

The ensemble cast includes Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Lamorne Morris, Ser’Darius Blain, Awkwafina, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Rhys Darby, Morgan Turner, and Madison Iseman.

Jake Kasdan returns to direct from a screenplay co-written with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. The film is produced by Matt Tolmach, Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Kasdan.

“You were born with a gift greater than you know.” That powerful declaration sets the tone for the magical, action-packed trailer for ‘Children of Blood and Bone,’ Gina Prince-Bythewood’s upcoming film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel. Paramount Pictures released the official trailer, offering audiences a glimpse into the world of Orïsha.

Starring Thuso Mbedu, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, and Tosin Cole, the story follows Zélie (Mbedu) and her older brother Tzain (Cole). To rise up against an oppressive regime and restore magic to their kingdom, the siblings form an unlikely alliance with the king’s own children, Princess Amari (Stenberg) and Prince Inan (Idris).

The fantasy features an ensemble cast, including Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran, Viola Davis as Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba as Lekan, Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, Regina King as Queen Nehanda, and Zackary Momoh as Adetayo. Ready for a new trip? Well, pack your bags! Whoopi Goldberg, Jenifer Lewis, Vanessa Williams, and Vivica A. Fox are set to star in ‘Women Like Us,’ a new original comedy directed by Tasha Smith about a fabulous group of ladies brought together for one unforgettable weekend getaway, coming to Netflix.

The film follows a recently widowed woman who’s whisked away to the Hamptons by her lifelong best friends and sister on the weekend that should have been her 30th wedding anniversary. What starts as an escape turns into a reckoning—with grief, marriage, and the sisterhood that’s held them together for years—along with a timely reminder that dreams don’t come with an expiration date.

The screenplay is written by Ali Kinney (‘Ginny & Georgia,’ ‘Love Life,’ ‘The Crossover’), with additional writing from Tracy Oliver (‘Girls Trip,’ ‘The Sun Is Also a Star,’ ‘The Blackening’).

‘Women Like Us’ is produced by James Lopez and Poppy Hanks for Macro Film Studios, alongside Anikah McLaren and Mark R. Wright for Higher Ground Productions. Michelle Obama executive produces for Higher Ground Productions, with Charles D. King executive producing for Macro Film Studios.

This marks the first-ever collaboration between the two major production companies, both of which have several other projects in the works with Netflix, including the series ‘All the Sinners Bleed’ and ‘The Altruists,’ as well as an untitled mother-daughter comedy led by Julianne Moore.

Filming is scheduled to begin this fall in New York City, with further casting and release timeline details expected to be announced at a later date.

Paramount+ has released the final trailer for the highly anticipated third season of ‘Lioness,’ giving audiences a new look at Zoe Saldaña and Morgan Freeman as the stakes rise on every front.

In the new season, Joe (Saldaña) is pulled into a war that no longer stays confined to the mission—it follows her home. As hidden networks and foreign operatives circle closer, trusted names vanish and old alliances start to crack, blurring the line between friend and threat. Guided by Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly), Joe must fight her way through a conflict that now threatens everything and everyone she holds close.

I saw The Odyssey twice in four days.

The first time, I was simply trying to keep up. I went in almost blind. I knew the broad strokes. The Trojan Horse. The Cyclops. The Sirens. Zeus. What I didn’t realize was how all of those stories fit together into one epic narrative.

The second viewing completely changed the experience. Once I wasn’t focused on following the mythology, I was able to appreciate the filmmaking, the performances, and the emotional architecture Christopher Nolan built underneath the spectacle. The result was a film that became richer, more moving, and ultimately more satisfying.

Quick review: The Odyssey is a story about war, pride, consequence, family, and what it costs to find your way home. I love it! Go see it. See it on the biggest screen you can see it on! And if you can take it, cause it’s long, go more than once!

Spoilers Ahead.

The Hero’s Story?

Most people will tell you The Odyssey is about a hero battling monsters, outwitting mythical creatures, and surviving an epic quest to get home. It’s those things. But I also saw something else. I saw a story about the consequences of pride, entitlement, and the choices we make in pursuit of victory. Every obstacle Odysseus faces is tied, in some way, to decisions made by him or his men, and the journey becomes less about defeating monsters than confronting the cost of hubris, stupidity, or desperation. Beneath the spectacle is a deeply human story. This man trying to get back to his family and land. A father returning to the son he left behind, and a man searching not just for home, but for redemption after violence and war left him lost.

Matt Damon Anchors the Film

Matt Damon carries this enormous movie on his shoulders. He is well cast as Odysseus, bringing a realness, gravitas, warmth, intelligence, and quiet determination to a man who spends years traveling, fighting, strategizing, and searching for his way home to Ithaca. It’s a commanding performance. He feels trustworthy. You immediately understand why people follow him and why his family never stops believing he’ll return. His performance never feels showy. He allows everyone around him room to shine.

Damon is his most poignant when he is reunited with his long-lost family. When the fractured Odysseus is reunited with his wife (Ann Hathaway), the warrior, king, husband, and man become one again. When face to face with his son (Tom Holland), the movie’s emotional center comes fully into focus. These scenes are about a father leaving a baby and discovering a young man and a son standing beside the father he has spent his life imagining. That emotional homecoming gives the accompanying action its power. When it is time to reclaim his kingdom, Damon moves into another level of excellence. He becomes Jason Bourne, and I mean that as the highest compliment. He is precise, ferocious, and completely in command, but now every blow carries years of loss behind it.

Please, don’t get me started on the dog. That reunion absolutely broke me. In a movie filled with gods, monsters, battles, and spectacle, one old dog recognizing the man he waited years to see again may be its most devastating moment.

Growing and Poisoned Heart

Robert Pattinson is perfectly cast as Antinous, the ruthless leader of Penelope’s suitors.

He never asks the audience to like him, and he doesn’t soften the character with charm or irony. Instead, he fully embraces Antinous’s arrogance, cruelty, and sense of entitlement. Pattinson’s Antinous is sniveling. He is manipulative, calculating, and quietly terrifying, creating a villain whose confidence makes him even more dangerous. He commands every scene he’s in, and by the time Odysseus finally confronts him, the audience is more than ready for the reckoning. It is one of Pattinson’s finest performances and proof once again that he is one of the most fearless actors working today

Another nice surprise of the film for me was Tom Holland. Telemachus begins the story as a boy searching for a father he barely remembers. By the end, he’s become a man capable of standing beside him. Even though he still needs some fight training!

Samantha Morton is the one!

If I had to pick one performance that completely captivated me, it’s Samantha Morton as Circe. Her section of the movie was scary… and as the co-founder of a horror movie production company, I really perked up at these scenes!

It’s unsettling. Beautiful. Terrifying.

Odysseus’ sailors leave him behind and roll up to a home on a hill wildly desperate for food. Circe, expecting them, has set a clever trap. After an initial ‘don’t hurt me’ performance, she welcomes them with warm soup and mendacity. She serves a meal that transforms them into pigs… or really reveals their true selves.

Men filled with so much want. Gluttony. Violence. Lust.

The irony is that we’ve already watched these same soldiers sack cities, burn villages, and justify every action in the name of victory. We don’t actually know what they would have done had Circe simply fed them and left them alone.

When they first approached, they seemed to be just hungry and did not pose a threat. But… Would they have robbed her? Killed her? Destroyed everything she owned?

I was forced to ask the question because the film never answers it.

Odysseus ultimately threatens her ‘sister’ and negotiates to get his men back, and rather than destroying her, he asks for information that helps him get home.

It’s one of the smartest scenes Nolan has ever directed. The soldiers’ transformation back into their disguises as ‘men’ is equally trippy!

I would watch an entire movie about Circe.

A Story About Hubris

Watching it a second time, I thought this was a story about men convinced they deserve whatever lies beyond the next horizon.

Again and again, Odysseus and his crew create the disasters they later have to survive. They go towards victory and abundance directly into catastrophe.

One moment, in particular, struck me early in their travels home: they come to a land, desperate with hunger; they see a single sheep, but instead of feeding on it, they follow it, seeking an entire flock. Which leads them into the Cyclops’ cave. They had time to escape, but nope. They stay and wait for the cave’s owner. Oh boy.

The sequence suddenly becomes far more morally complicated than the myth usually suggests. Here are facts, from the Cyclops’ perspective: strangers have simply invaded his home.

The Sirens

The Sirens sequence is unforgettable. Odysseus tied to the mast while everyone else protects themselves from their song is incredible. The Sirens sing exactly what every person most desperately wants or needs to hear.

“It told you that what you most want is what you can’t have.
And what you most can’t have is what you already had, and lost” - The Siren Song in Nolan’s The Odyssey

They speak to regret. To grief. To the life you lost and can never recover. That idea lingered with me long after the film ended.

Moments Big, Small, and Moving.

The film’s scale is breathtaking. The coastlines. The environments.

The journey through Hades is haunting, and the conversations with the dead are powerful and visually breathtaking. Shout out to Elliot Page as Sinon. He ate!!

Every scene with the Trojan horse was mind-boggling, claustrophic, and visceral!

Odysseus talking to his queen about the violent sacking of Troy…Powerful. His return home is both emotional and exhilarating. The reunions with Penelope, with Telemachus …and with Argos, Odysseus’ loyal dog, completely broke me. That moment earned a tear.

The final act’s action never overwhelms the story. Instead, every confrontation carries the weight of twenty years of fury and longing.

STFU about CGI

People will undoubtedly talk a lot about the use of practical effects versus CGI in this film. I honestly don’t care. My only question is this:

Did the filmmaking pull me out of the story? For me, the answer was no. Never.

Let’s just let the filmmaker make his movie and crawl out of their process.

The Cast Beyond the Conversation

One of the things I appreciated most about The Odyssey was the ensemble cast. There has been far too much conversation about who “should” or “shouldn’t” play characters drawn from Greek mythology. Sitting in the theater, it simply never crossed my mind. The performances were so compelling that race disappeared, leaving only character.

Himesh Patel is exceptional as Eurylochus, bringing depth and quiet complexity to Odysseus’s trusted second-in-command. Zendaya is luminous in her dual role as Athena and the young Trojan priestess, giving the goddess an angelic presence that is both gentle and quietly powerful.

Lupita Nyong’o delivers a commanding performance as Helen of Troy and her twin sister, Clytemnestra, reminding us that talent and screen presence matter far more than preconceived ideas about who belongs in a myth. And then there’s John Leguizamo. As Eumaeus, he gives what I believe is the finest performance of his career. His portrayal of unwavering loyalty and quiet devotion is deeply moving, and in a film filled with gods, kings, and warriors, he reminds us that true greatness often belongs to the ordinary people who never stop believing.

Not once during the film did I think about the actors’ backgrounds. I thought about their characters. I thought about the story. That’s exactly what great casting is supposed to do.

These are mythological figures. They’re storytelling archetypes that have survived for thousands of years because the themes are universal.

What mattered to me wasn’t whether someone matched an ancient painting. What mattered was whether they made me believe.

Final Thoughts

Christopher Nolan adapted one of history’s greatest stories. He also reminds us why The Odyssey has endured for nearly three thousand years. Its complex emotional depth. This film takes that and matches it with brilliant performances and craftsmanship. It’s all reasons to see this movie.

Is The Odyssey Christopher Nolan’s greatest journey?

I don’t know… but it may be his most human. Beneath the gods, monsters, battles, and breathtaking spectacle is a story about a father, a husband, and a person lost trying to find their way home. It’s a film that rewards patience, asks big questions, and lingers long after the credits roll. The Odyssey is a journey worth taking.

The Walk of Fame Selection Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has unveiled its 2027 Hollywood Walk of Fame Class, celebrating entertainment professionals across Motion Pictures, Television, Recording, Radio, and Live Performance.

Among the notable actors honored in this year’s class are Idris Elba and Delroy Lindo for Motion Pictures, alongside David Alan Grier, Keke Palmer, and Raven-Symoné for Television. Other prominent Black honorees inducted across categories include hip-hop legends Lil Wayne and Joseph “Grandmaster Flash” Saddler for Recording, as well as radio host Lenard “Charlamagne tha God” McKelvey for Radio.

The honorees were selected from hundreds of nominations during a committee meeting on May 15, 2026, and officially ratified by the Hollywood Chamber’s Board of Directors on July 22, 2026.

Welcoming the new class, Walk of Fame Selection Chairman Peter Roth praised the 32 recipients: “The Walk of Fame Selection Committee is proud to welcome the Class of 2027 to one of the most enduring symbols of achievement in entertainment. Idris Elba is officially back in action as Extraction 3 has entered production in New South Wales, Australia. The actor reprises his role as the mysterious intelligence operative introduced in Extraction 2, joining returning stars Chris Hemsworth and Golshifteh Farahani for the next installment of Netflix’s blockbuster action franchise.

Directed by Sam Hargrave from a screenplay by David Weil, the third film promises to raise the stakes even higher. Hargrave recently shared that the creative team is pushing the boundaries of action filmmaking, aiming to deliver the franchise’s biggest and most ambitious set pieces to date.

Although Netflix is keeping the story under wraps, Elba’s return suggests his enigmatic character will play a much larger role in Tyler Rake’s next mission. Netflix is staying in business with Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black, renewing the hit drama for a fourth season before Season 3 premieres.

The early pickup follows the strong performance of Season 2, which was released in two parts and spent six weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 while reaching the No. 1 spot in 17 countries.

Created, written, directed, and executive produced by Tyler Perry, the series centers on Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) and Mallory (Crystle Stewart), two women from opposite worlds whose lives become increasingly intertwined through power, family, and betrayal.

Season 3 will see Kimmie claim her place within the Bellarie family, only to find herself caught in a dangerous conflict that forces her to work alongside Mallory. As secrets unravel and loyalties are tested, the family’s empire hangs in the balance.

Perry celebrated the renewal, saying there is still much more of the Bellarie family’s story to tell and thanked fans for their continued support of the series.

The ensemble cast also features Richard Lawson, Debbi Morgan, Charles Malik Whitfield, Amber Reign Smith, Xavier Smalls, Terrell Carter, Ricco Ross, Julian Horton, Steven G. Norfleet, Bryan Tanaka, and several returning cast members.

Inaugural Entertainment has released the official trailer for its upcoming action thriller ‘The Fix’ (previously titled ‘Hotel Tehran’) starring Liam Neeson, Zachary Levi, Titus Welliver, and Quincy Isaiah (‘Nemesis,’ ‘Winning Time’), in a gripping story inspired by real events and based on an original idea by Bazzel Baz, a former CIA Intelligence Special Operations Group officer.

The film follows a group of disgraced ex-CIA operators—mentored by Larry (Neeson) and led by Tucker (Levi)—who, disillusioned by the collapse of the war in Afghanistan, get one last shot at redemption. After a mission gone tragically wrong, the team heads deep into the heart of Tehran for a daring, life-changing rescue that could either restore their honor or cost them everything.

Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is set to headline the highly anticipated return of the critically acclaimed stage production Pre-Existing Condition, a new play by Marin Ireland, this fall at New York City’s Greenwich House Theater. The play is directed by Maria Dizzia.

Nyong’o joins an impressive rotating cast that also includes Phillipa Soo, Susannah Flood, Hari Nef, and Edie Falco, alongside Greg Keller, Dael Orlandersmith, and Sarah Steele.

Behind the scenes, the production powered by an accomplished team of producers, including actress and producer Susan Kelechi Watson, with Sterling K. Brown and his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe serving as a co-producers. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe continue expanding their impact as producers through KingSimmo Productions, further supporting compelling stories across film, television, and theater.

Pre-Existing Condition returns to the New York stage this fall, with tickets for the first eight weeks now available.

A24 has released the official trailer for Chris Rock’s latest directorial feature, ‘Misty Green,’ starring Rosalind Eleazar as the lead in a drama about a once-celebrated actress struggling to make a comeback in her career after a complicated past derailed it.

According to the official logline: “Years after her Hollywood breakthrough, a talented actress whose career has stalled fights for her second act.”

Alongside Eleazar, the cast includes Daniel Kaluuya, Chris Rock, Adam Driver, Anna Kendrick, Topher Grace, Anthony Anderson, Tracie Thoms, and more.

‘Misty Green’ is written and directed by Rock, who also produced alongside David Worthen Brooks and Peter Rice. Miles Alva, Nelson George, Shaum S. Sengupta, and Max Henke serve as executive producers.

Writer and director Blake Martin has officially announced the lead cast for his upcoming R-rated dramatic short film, Sin and Bones, with DeVon Lamont Thomas and Nolita Pore set to star in the film’s leading roles.

Thomas will portray Saint, a hardworking South Side mechanic whose quiet optimism begins to collide with the reality of loving someone who refuses to love him publicly. Pore will star as Brooke, a brilliant, accomplished professional who has spent years carefully compartmentalizing every aspect of her life—including the one relationship she never intended to become real.

Following a string of emotionally driven short films, Martin ventures into new territory with Sin and Bones, his most sensual and emotionally intimate work to date.

Set almost entirely over the course of a single evening, Sin and Bones follows two lovers whose relationship has existed almost exclusively behind closed doors. What begins as a casual arrangement rooted in physical attraction slowly evolves into something far more dangerous as one of them begins to crave an intimacy the other never intended to give. Through sensuality, vulnerability, and sharp emotional conflict, the film explores how two people can share the same bed while speaking completely different emotional languages.

“Every relationship has its own language,“ Martin says. “Some people use sex to avoid intimacy. Others use sex hoping to find it. Sin and Bones lives in the space between those two people.“

Production is scheduled for late August in the Chicago area, with filming taking place over three days on location.

Sin and Bones is written and directed by Blake Martin and produced by 3rd Week of January Productions as part of Martin’s six-films-in-six-months initiative. The film will be released exclusively on TheBlkScript.
