Netflix is sending audiences back to Hillman College. A Different World has officially been renewed for a second season following a strong debut for the rebooted series.
The show premiered September 24 and quickly landed at No. 4 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list, generating 4.2 million views and appearing in the Top 10 across 15 countries. Its impact has also extended across social media, where the new generation of Hillman students has sparked plenty of conversation.
Created and showrun by Felicia Pride, the series follows Deborah Wayne and her classmates as they navigate college life, relationships, friendships and their evolving sense of purpose.
Pride welcomed the renewal, saying the response from viewers has been validating and expressing excitement about continuing the story at Hillman.
Executive producer and director Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original A Different World, also celebrated the announcement and credited audiences for bringing the series into Netflix’s global Top 10.
Netflix comedy executive Tracey Pakosta added that the company is excited by the worldwide response and looks forward to seeing where the characters’ stories go next.
What to Expect in Season 2
The sophomore season will pick up after a transformative summer as Deborah and her classmates return to campus determined to embrace a fresh start. However, their past choices, new relationships, shifting friendships and questions about their futures quickly complicate that plan.
Pride serves as creator, showrunner and executive producer, while Allen returns as executive producer and director. The executive producing team also includes Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Mandy Summers.
With Season 2 now officially on the way, the next chapter of Hillman College is just getting started.
