Afrika Bambaataa, one of the most influential early figures in hip-hop culture, has reportedly passed away according to Allhiphop.com.
Born Lance Taylor, Bambaataa helped shape the foundation of hip-hop through music, DJ culture, and his role in expanding the movement beyond the Bronx. He is best known for the groundbreaking 1982 track “Planet Rock,” a genre-defining record that helped introduce electro-funk and futuristic production into hip-hop.
Beyond music, Bambaataa also made his mark in film and television. He is widely recognized for his appearance in the 1984 hip-hop classic Beat Street, a film that played a major role in bringing rap, breakdancing, and DJ culture to wider audiences. His music was also featured in projects such as Vanilla Sky, Swordfish, and The Mechanic, extending his influence into Hollywood and pop culture.
Bambaataa’s impact on the sound, style, and global reach of hip-hop remains undeniable. His work helped shape a culture that would go on to influence music, film, television, and generations of artists around the world.
May he rest in peace.
