Ava DuVernay Reunites With Netflix For Constitutional Documentary ‘14th’
Chronicling the 150-year fight over the amendment that radically rewrote the American promise.
Award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay is teaming up with Netflix once again for 14th, a new documentary set to premiere later this year. The film examines the lasting impact of the 14th Amendment and explores how questions surrounding citizenship, equality, and constitutional rights continue to shape the United States today.
Describing the project, DuVernay said that while 13th examined who is incarcerated, 14th shifts the conversation toward who is recognized and protected under the Constitution. Rather than focusing solely on history, the documentary connects the amendment’s legacy to the issues facing America today.
Produced by DuVernay’s Array Filmworks alongside longtime collaborators Spencer Averick, Tammy Garnes, and Paul Garnes, the documentary has been quietly in production for the past two years.
14th features interviews with a diverse group of political leaders, legal scholars, historians, and commentators, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, Sen. Alex Padilla, former Sen. Jeff Flake, Stacey Abrams, Sherrilyn Ifill, Carla Hayden, Hasan Piker, and historian Donald T. Critchlow.
The film continues DuVernay’s longstanding collaboration with Netflix, following the success of 13th, the Emmy-winning limited series When They See Us, and Colin in Black & White. Netflix praised the filmmaker’s ability to connect historical events with present-day conversations, calling 14th another ambitious and thought-provoking addition to her body of work.
