New York — If you spent six seasons watching Leon Simmons hold South Central together with loyalty, muscle, and quiet devastation, you already know the man deserved his own story. FX agrees. The untitled Snowfall spinoff has been officially ordered to series and is set to debut on Hulu in 2026. And with nine new cast members just announced, it is becoming very clear this is not a consolation prize. This thing is being built to hit.
The spinoff is set in 1990s Los Angeles, picking up in the aftermath of the original series. It follows Wanda and Leon Simmons as they try to push West Coast rap into the mainstream at a moment when the culture is shifting fast. The streets are still volatile. Gang wars are escalating. And record labels are circling, looking to profit off hip-hop’s growing influence before the culture even knows what is happening to it. It is a smart pivot. The crack era made Snowfall. The rap era could make this.
Gail Bean and Isaiah John are returning to reprise their roles as Wanda Bell-Simmons and Leon Simmons. That part was announced back in November. What just dropped, though, is the real news.
Nine new cast members have been added to the series in heavily recurring roles. Veteran actor Mykelti Williamson, who you know from Forrest Gump and Heat, will play a character named Big Daddy Casey. Brandon Mychal Smith, best known for his work on Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral and FX’s You’re the Worst, is also on board. Nicki Micheaux, a three-time NAACP Image Award nominee who recently starred in the horror film Night Patrol, rounds out the trio. Joining them are Isidora Goreshter from Shameless, Eric Balfour from The Offer, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, and Demetrius Grosse, fresh off his MCU debut as Eric Williams in Marvel’s Wonder Man. His résumé includes Banshee, Justified, and Straight Outta Compton.
Original Snowfall cast member Quincy Chad, who played Big Deon on the original series, is also returning. Earlier announcements had already confirmed that Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III, also known as Buddy, would join as franchise newcomers.
Behind the camera, the foundation is equally solid. Malcolm Spellman is writing and executive producing. He previously worked with FX on the documentary series Hip Hop Uncovered, which means he is not coming to this material cold. He knows the era. He knows the culture. Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, Trevor Engelson, and Paul Garnes are also executive producing. FX Productions is producing the series.
The original Snowfall, created by the late John Singleton alongside Eric Amadio and Dave Andron, ran six seasons from 2017 to 2023, turning Damson Idris into a star and leaving a mark on prestige television that most shows never come close to. Spinoffs are a gamble. Most of them do not work. But centering this one on Wanda’s recovery and Leon’s reinvention, two of the most emotionally grounded characters the original series produced, is about as good a starting point as you could ask for.
A title and premiere date have not yet been announced. But the casting alone should be enough to keep the faithful patient. This one is worth watching.
