Filmmaker Joel Alfonso Vargas brings an unfiltered and deeply personal vision to the screen with his debut feature, Mad Bills To Pay, a coming-of-age drama rooted in the heart of a Dominican American community in The Bronx. Written and directed by Vargas, the film captures the energy, struggles, and emotional complexity of young adulthood in New York City.
The story follows Rico, played by Juan Collado, a carefree teenager spending his summer selling bootleg nutcracker cocktails while enjoying life without much concern for the future. But everything begins to shift when his girlfriend Destiny, portrayed by Destiny Checo, starts staying with him and his family inside their cramped apartment. As their relationship grows more intense, the pair are forced to confront the realities of responsibility, love, and growing up in a city that moves fast and leaves little room for mistakes.
Drawing inspiration from his hometown experiences, Vargas crafts a grounded and emotionally honest portrait of life in The Bronx, blending humor, chaos, and tenderness throughout the film. Featuring breakout performances from Collado and Checo, the independent feature highlights the beauty and unpredictability of young love while exploring the pressures facing urban youth today.
Produced by an independent creative team led by Joel Alfonso Vargas, the film continues to generate attention for its authenticity, fresh performances, and intimate storytelling style that shines a spotlight on underrepresented communities and voices.
