The adventure will continue in the next ‘Shrek’ spinoff, ‘Donkey,’ this time putting the spotlight on the ogre’s best friend.
Universal and DreamWorks have scheduled ‘Donkey’ to premiere in summer 2028. Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as the fan-favorite character in an origin story exploring how a donkey became Donkey.
Charlie Bean (live-action ‘Lady and the Tramp’) is set to direct, with DreamWorks veteran Matt Flynn (‘The Wild Robot’ and ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’) serving as co-director. Rebecca Huntley will produce.
The announcement comes just over a week after Universal Pictures released the first official trailer for ‘Shrek 5,’ which is set to hit theaters in summer 2027. In the upcoming sequel, Donkey reunites with his longtime best friend Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz), alongside their three children, voiced by Zendaya, Marcello Hernández, and Skyler Gisondo.
‘Donkey’ will follow the release of ‘Shrek 5,’ arriving in theaters on June 30, 2028.
