Sixteen years after the original Why Did I Get Married?, Tyler Perry is bringing the beloved group of friends back together for Why Did I Get Married Again?, a new dramedy that moves the story from a marriage retreat to a wedding in Italy.
Written, directed, and produced by Perry, the film centers on Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White), who travel to Europe with their longtime friends for the wedding of their daughter, Jasmine (Armani Greer), and her fiancé, football star Wesley (Everett Osborne). Wesley is also the son of Roselyn (Taraji P. Henson), a successful businesswoman and longtime connection to the group who makes her debut in the franchise.
But what should be a celebration quickly becomes complicated. Old tensions resurface, secrets come to light, unexpected romances emerge, and even a physical confrontation breaks out. Meanwhile, Mike’s (Richard T. Jones) questionable new hairstyle becomes a source of its own comedy. Angela’s best friend Sheila (Jill Scott) even offers her wine to help handle the wedding chaos—though Angela makes it clear that one glass won’t be enough.

At the center of the story is the difference between how relationships appear and what happens behind closed doors. Kenya (Laya Deleon Hayes), the daughter of Terry (Perry) and Dianne (Sharon Leal), assumes her parents and their friends have perfect marriages. Sheila eventually admits that the reality is far from it.

Now, the friends are coming together again as their children reach adulthood. Jasmine’s wedding forces the group to confront how much their lives have changed—and how much their old patterns remain. Seeing their children mirror their own behavior also pushes them to reconsider the examples they have set.
